This is a somewhat elusive and enigmatic image. While reminiscent of Michelangelo’s creation fresco, with God’s hand stretching out almost touching Adam’s to infuse life into him, the similarity ends there. The anatomical interaction of the two hands in this image recalls rather Courbet’s erotic painting of the same name. The hands carry out an onanistic action which is implied by the omission of its context.
