Gaia – 1996

Oil on canvas by Victor Gordon
Oil on canvas.  60 x 75cm

Gaia was the mythical mother of the Gods. She is depicted in the throes of labour on the delivery table. She is in a state of extremis on the verge of delivery. I have intensified the manner in which she is seen by creating a trompe l’ oei  key-hole through which we gaze, to glean an illicit voyeuristic impression of her predicament. This also has the effect of distancing ourselves from the reality of childbirth, for outside of the oval eye, is a sanitised plain off-white surround.
