Infanta Magnoliata # 1 – 2019

Mixed media sculpture. Bisque doll’s head Magnolia root and stem, simulated paper ruff.
H45 x W38 x D33 cm

This sculpture contrasts the biologically organic in nature, with the artificial superimposition of an historically fashionable (period) societal refinement, denoting sophistication. It implies the coexistence of diametrically opposed currents in human genetic heredity on the one hand, and the social status, accorded inherited privilege on the other. The underpinning root system of the Magnolia, besides being obviously structurally organic in its configuration, can also refer to the contemporary social obsession with personal genealogy. This is juxtaposed above by the geometrically simulated ruff, an outward projecting man-made accoutrement, which symbolically denotes a higher order of civilized advancement. Ruffs were particularly prevalent among European ruling classes during excessive exploitative colonizing periods, implying a darker side to this pristine expression of wealth. The whole is homogenized by an application of white pigment to the withered Magnolia, the traditional symbol of purity and nobility. This enhances a potential (ironic) reading of the symbolic innocence engendered by the flesh-tinted baby’s head. The sculpture’s title suggests that the child is indeed of royal lineage.
