Lifeline – 1993

Lifeline consists of an appropriated collage of the Venus de Melos and a black and white photocopy of the artist’s right hand emanating from her thigh. The floating image is placed on a background of a rich blue purple velvet.

The juxtaposing of an outstretched hand with a highly valued classical work of art is suggestive of a couple of scenarios. One; she is the succouring mother offering multiple teats for us to culturally thrive on; or two, the hand represents the capitalist greed that drives us all to achieve wealth and fame. And upon attainment, however scurrilous the means, we invest in high value works of art which symbolically assuages any guilt we may encounter.
