Mortal Portal – 2026

Assemblage; vintage piano pedals; brass keyhole escutcheon; cast aluminium shell; red cedar shaped block. H42 x W35 x D11.5 cm

The richly polished conjoined metal parts form a stylized (historically archaic) female pudendum. The rounded shell forms the mons veneris (mount of venus). the wedged lines converge centrally toward the lower smooth vaginal entry point at the keyhole, entry point to the birthing canal. The inverted brass or ‘golden arches’ form the labia or portal, through which we all pass into our mortal state in the world.

The metal parts are mounted on a shaped. backing reminiscent of a trophy plaque or, could double as a headstone – a powerful reminder of our mortality.
