Old Intolerances diminish Cultural Fusion – 2025
H30 x W40 cm
Acrylic and coloured pencil on 300 gm Hahnemühle paper
As a self-imposed exile from the racial discrimination of Apartheid South Africa (in the 80’s) it stunned me to discover the deep-rooted ongoing racial divide between (mainly) White settlers and the First Nations Peoples of Australia. A recent referendum resulted in a NO vote to acknowledgement in the Australian Constitution.
My origins are symbolized by the skin of the Zebra. It is combined and fused with the ongoing settlers’ racial targeting of Australia’s indigenous inhabitants in the form of an emblematic “Aboriginal’ dartboard.
In formal terms the organic textured skin is fused with the strong flat geometric concentric circles of the targeting device.
