Paragone of Virtues

Two dimensionality and illusion in three dimensional form. The work reads two dimensionally from one side or the other. A traditional painting stretcher, representing the craft of the painter, offers a simultaneous view of a blank canvas when stretched (the structure), as well as the reverse view of the stretcher (sub structure). From either major viewpoint the image is the inverted mirror of the other.

Cast in bronze, the traditional sculptural material of permanence the Paragone of Virtues offers a reflection and comparison of the dominance of one genre’s craft over the other. This anachronistic renaissance reference is intended to additionally offer a contemporary metaphoric re-evaluation of the dominance of media driven virtual art over actual art objects, be they painting or sculpture.
