POLICE CHIEF ARRESTS HIMSELF 1992
Treated news poster over painted board
60 x 45 cm
This painting and collage was inspired by a real sensationalist newspaper poster which I treated to become transparent and laid over a painted torso. The absurdity of the statement made for a humorous look at an unusual aspect of Australian culture. I believe this to be an uncharacteristic example of Australian humour. It appealed to me because of my half-Jewish roots. It is not common for Australians to ridicule themselves in the way Jewish humour does, where Jewish subjects are invariably always the butt of their own jokes. This is what makes Jewish humour so philosophically penetrating and entertaining.
