Portentous dark encounter – 2020

The suspended car tyre with attached buffalo horns is loaded with symbolism for the artist. The car tyre was the symbol of kangaroo court-style summary executions in South Africa. Victim had a tyre placed around their necks and they were then dowsed with petrol and set alight. This gruesome punishment was intended for black collaborators (impimpi) of the Apartheid government. The horns create a zoomorphic somewhat threatening mask-like but faceless visage.
