Rhubarb 2009

Painting by Victor Gordon

The viewer is privy to an intimate moment when a slumbering couple relax (perhaps after some exertion) and the comfort of a cuppa! The designs on the Rhubarb brand cups are complementary, the one with vertical red on white stripes, the other with horizontal. As a metaphor they indicate the assumed different roles of the two individuals cosily wrapped in each other’s arms. The composition which juxtaposes an interior scene against an infinitely recessional skyscape is loosely derived from Titian’s highly erotic heterosexual Venus series (themselves derived from his teacher Giorgione) with the variance that we are beholding an intimacy between two women. The folds of the blankets suggest at the penetrating level of that intimacy!
