Surveillance is a very real issue in contemporary society. Australia is an over-governed conservative society. Citizens are strictly controlled and their personal data is an open book to authorities. Geographic movement of individuals via internet telephone monitoring offers a unique social control mechanism to governments. The internet has, inter alia, created an effective manner of policing on a scale heretofor unknown. Burghers’ research interests, hobbies and tendencies are available for analysis and evaluation. This is valuable data for effective control.

Not only paranoia but the palpable alienation of modern city dwelling is also signified by the over-sized reiteration of an earlier sculpture by the artist to the left of the door. The derelict building is a squat offering the homeless a tenuous urban alternative. Overblown greed by the super-rich has transformed basic living space from being the realization of a dream into an unattainable nightmare.

Capitalism requires ever increasing markets and this translates to more consumers. Our planet is already overpopulated and most people have to be satisfied with less in spatial materiality. Australia ironically, has arguably, more under or unutilised real estate on the planet – but the reality for most is that there is no place to call home.

And where do the ideals of democratic freedom for individuals fit-in to this dystopian picture referenced here.

The painting is purposefully dark and grungy and sums-up the artist’s views and experiences of twelve years lived in Sydney.
