The Hulk ( Study) – 2024

New South Wales’ first white settlement started with the transportation of convicts kept in limbo on prison hulks (decommissioned out-of-date warships) in the United Kingdom’s estuaries. Port Jackson was their desti[nation]. This drawing is directly based on multiple images of a then popular hulk in the Deptford estuary. Artists W H Harriot (convicts being rowed out to a prison hulk) Samuel Prout, William Crotch and George Cooke (et al) had all created artworks depicting this subject.

This was the artist’s study for his painting “In the beginning, The Incredible Hulk begat….” created shortly thereafter also in 2024.
