My sculpture ‘The Essential Arch Bull 1994’ is on show in Cape Town at the Zeitz MOCAA gallery. It is on loan from the Constitutional Court Collection (Concourt) in Johannesburg. The exhibition “Spring is Rebellious – The Art and Life of Albie Sachs” highlights the extraordinary life and legacy of Albie Sachs, an advocate, freedom fighter, judge, and writer. It also explores the revolutionary role that art has played in South Africa and Mozambique.
Albie Sach’s ground-breaking idea of combining Art and Justice is manifest in every aspect of the Constitutional Court precinct. Besides the extensive collection of art works on display there, the doors, carpets as well as the beadwork of the new South African flag behind the Judges benches, have all been made by artists. Well worth a visit.
My work, made in voluntary exile in Australia in 1994 highlights the inequity, nepotism and corruption in the local art world and specifically critiques the most prestigious Australian Archibald Art Prize for portraiture. The notion of injustice expressed then in this sculpture, still has potent currency – even after thirty years and can be applied universally.
The exhibition opened on Thursday, 24 July 2025 and runs until Sunday, 23 August 2026
